Joules was started by Tom Joule in 1989, which is when he started selling clothing on a stand at a country show in Leicestershire.

He knew his customers very well and could see the clothing they were wearing was practical but lacked an edge. Himself and his small team set about reinventing traditional British clothing by adding twists to classic pieces, with many having an element of surprise, like a mismatched button, a contrast colour hiding underneath a colour or a printed lining.

Customers found these classic styles complemented their lives perfectly, come rain or shine. Whether it was for outdoor walks, trips to the beach, cosy nights in or the school run, this colourful country style clothing was becoming more popular.

However, the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in 2001 forced every rural show and event to be cancelled, leaving Tom with nowhere to sell his extensive stock. So, he drove around Britain persuading clothing shops to buy and sell his items. The following year saw a Joules store open in Market Harborough.

There was also a mail order business up and running, and it wasn’t long before the Joules website launched. Shops sprung up in market and coastal towns while, on the back of wholesale success in North America and Germany, dedicated websites for both countries were created. Children’s and baby collections were introduced, soon followed by accessories and homeware.
