Ancestry Features

Family Trees

Thanks to Ancestry, you can research and uncover the story of your family with a family tree.

Don't worry if you do not have the details of a lot of family members as you can start your family tree with just a few and let Ancestry search for them in their records. You should keep an eye out for the leaf symbol, which means they have discovered something intriguing which may relate to particular ancestors.

This hint could reveal a new name to investigate or provide you with another ancestor to add to your tree. The more details you can add to your tree, the more hints you will receive, which will allow the story of your family to become clearer. Start your tree now and you could find an infamous relative, a photograph of your great-grandmother and much more.

Gift Membership

A gift membership could be the perfect present for someone eager to learn more about their roots and heritage.

If you would like to give someone the chance to make family discoveries and connections, there are two packages you can subscribe to. UK Premium membership will give the recipient access to all UK and Ireland records for six months, while opt for the worldwide option and they will be able to access all of the international records available on Ancestry too.

Whichever you choose, they are one-off, non-renewing subscriptions. If you are buying for someone else, you may find Ancestry offers available at certain times of the year, such as Black Friday.

Genealogy Resources

You can research your family's story thanks to the largest online genealogy resource, which features 16 billion historical records from 60 countries.

With two million members and 70 million family trees, you are sure to be able to find out something new about you and your family. Find out what family members did, what they looked like and who they married. You can start to plot your family tree or begin to trace family members with your surname.

Discover the meaning and history behind your last name by entering it on their site, while you can find out where your family lived in the UK and USA, average life expectancy and common occupations of people with your surname. Enter a relative's first and last names, meanwhile, and find them among Ancestry's person profiles and historical records, and discover their birth date and place, occupation, military service information and more.

Historical Collections

The range of historical records Ancestry offers is an extensive one and they are there to help you when searching for living relatives or those who have passed away.

Their England and Wales birth, death and marriage (BDM) index collections from 1837-2005 — all of which you can search by name — provide the most complete resource available online. If you are looking for vital records from before 1837, they have parish registers, which will allow you to find UK parish baptism, marriage and burial entries.

All of these records will be key to researching your family history and will help you distinguish between people with the same name. You can also look at UK census records, with their most recent being the 1911 census.

They go back every 10 years until 1841, which was the first to ask for personal information. Census records can tell you where your ancestor lived, their name, gender, age on the date of the census, occupation and birthplace.

From 1851, the person's relationship to the head of the household and marital status are shown. The 1911 census is special as you can view the original household schedules, meaning you can read details about your relatives in their own handwriting and, sometimes, personal comments. If a relative served in World War I, they have millions of easy to browse military records too, while there are videos which will provide tips on how to search.

AncestryDNA Shop

Visit the Ancestry shop and, as well as being able to buy AncestryDNA tests, you can order birth, marriage and death certificates or buy books and maps.

Order an official England or Wales birth, marriage or death certificate online from 1837 up to 18 months prior to the present date. These vital documents provide a record of some of the most important events in people's lives and were written by someone who witnessed it.

Birth certificates provide details of when and where they were born, the name of their mother and father (where acknowledged) and their father's occupation. From a marriage certificate, you can obtain information about the service, the bride and groom — including their ages and professions — and the witnesses, while a death certificate will show where and when a person died and the cause of death.

Search for your coat of arms and surname history, and order a framed print or embroidered coat of arms, while unique Cassani family history maps are available as downloads.
