The history of Debenhams can be traced back all the way to 1778, when William Clark established a draper's store in the West End of London which sold expensive fabrics, bonnets, gloves and parasols.

In 1813, a William Debenham invested in the store, which became Clark & Debenham. The first store outside of London opened in Cheltenham in 1818, while the company was renamed Debenham & Freebody in 1851 when Clement Freebody invested in the firm.

A wholesale business was established to sell cloth and other items to dressmakers and large retailers, while acquisitions of retail, wholesale and manufacturing businesses were undertaken during the remainder of the 19th century as offices opened across the globe.

In 1905, Debenhams Ltd was incorporated, while the business became a public company for the first time in 1928 - a year after the involvement of the Debenham family had ended. By 1950, Debenhams had become the largest department store group in the UK, owning 110 stores, while from 1985 to 1998, it was part of the Burton Group, during which time Designers at Debenhams was introduced.

The first international franchise was opened in Bahrain in 1997 while, following its separation from the Burton Group, it was acquired by Baroness Retail Ltd in 2003. The company now operates solely as an online business.
