The first cardfactory store was opened in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, in 1997 by Dean and Janet Hoyle, trading as a discount retailer selling products sourced from wholesalers.

This move created the group's in-house printing operations. cardfactory was bought by Charterhouse in 2011 and, a year later, they acquired Getting Personal — an online retailer of personalised cards and gifts. Their transactional website was launched in 2013.
