Still A Family Business
Charles and Eveline Clinkard opened their first shoe shop in Middlesbrough in 1924 and the company is still run by the family to this day, with current managing director Charles the third generation to take charge.
The Clinkard Group now boasts 33 stores across the UK. The company really established itself in the 1930s and 40s, while Eveline introduced children's footwear, which became a huge success. Eveline and the couple's sons, Colin, John and Roger, took over the running of the company in 1950 after Charles retired and by 1953, there were three stores.
Charles died in 1964 and four years later, Roger founded wholesale business Intershoe, which imported winter boots from Scandinavia. The 1970s saw the company open its first store outside of the North East, in Leeds, while Eveline retired in 1976 after 52 years in the business.
The 1980s saw Intershoe Ltd secure the distribution of the Elefanten brand for the UK and the Gabor agency for selling those shoes too. In 2002, the company picked up the Best Family Footwear Store and Overall Winner Award at the EMAP UK Footwear Awards, while their online store was launched two years later. They took over 12 stores from Stead and Simpson in 2008 and more awards followed in the next six years.
