Buy Tickets Online

On the Chiltern Railways website, you can buy tickets in advance online, with no booking fee, for routes across the United Kingdom. In fact, they sell train tickets to all UK destinations on the National Rail network. This means you can book Oxford to London or Banbury to London journeys. Once you’ve bought your tickets, you can choose to receive them in a variety of ways.

You can collect them at the station or receive them on your phone, via email or through the post. Whether you’re travelling to London Marylebone train station, Birmingham Moor Street, Oxford, High Wycombe, Banbury or Aylesbury, buying as far ahead as you can is likely to save you money.

The cheapest tickets are usually available for off-peak travel, so you should avoid the morning and evening rush hours. Check to see if two singles are cheaper than buying one return, while if you’re aged 16 or 17, you can buy a Saver Card at Chiltern Railways and get 50% off fares.

You can also save a third with one of various Railcard options, such as the Senior Railcard. Get a group travel deal when you book your ticket if there are three or more of your travelling, while if you make the same journey three or four times a week, you should see if a season ticket would work out cheaper.

Travel at Quieter Times

Thanks to the Chiltern Railways, you can check to see how busy your train is likely to be before you travel.

Available on their website or if you download the Chiltern Railways app, their Capacity Tracker will check how busy your Chiltern Railways train might be so you can choose your preferred service and travel with confidence. They regularly check the capacity of their services. This feature shows same-day capacity information as well as looks at future trains for approximately two weeks.

This guidance is based on the previous two weeks for each train service. A simple three-tier system on the app shows you which trains have plenty of space and which ones are looking like they’re going to be busier. The Capacity Tracker is also available if you plan a Chiltern journey (for travel on the same day or within the next two weeks) using the journey planner, be it from London Marylebone to Birmingham Moor Street or Oxford to London.
