You may be surprised to learn the collection of buildings and monuments now under the care of English Heritage began to be amassed in 1882.

At the time, heritage was the responsibility of the Office of Works, the government department responsible for architecture and building. In 1913, an Act of Parliament was passed which gave the department new powers — to make a collection of the greatest sites and buildings which told the story of Britain.

These were regarded as being prehistoric and medieval remains. By 1933, there were 273 sites in the collection, including Stonehenge, Rievaulx Abbey and Carisbrooke Castle, which were all open to the public. After the Second World War, the Ministry of Works, as it had become, became interested in other buildings, acquiring industrial sites and, in 1949, its first country house — Audley End in Essex.

However, it was decided it would be more financially sustainable if the National Trust took on England's country houses. By 1970, the English part of the collection stood at 300 sites, which were visited by more than 5.5 million people.

In 1983, what had effectively become the English national heritage collection was transferred to a new body set up by the Conservative government — the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission. Its first chairman, Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, did not like the name and it was re-christened English Heritage. Over the next decade and more, the collection improved and the season ticket was replaced by a gift and annual membership scheme.
