The story of the world’s oldest and largest toy store began in Cornwall with a man called William Hamley.

He dreamed of opening a toy shop, and in 1760 he did just that. With humble beginnings as Noah’s Ark in 1760, by 1837 the Hamleys toy store was already a famous London landmark. It was so successful that a new branch opened in Regent Street in 1881 to cope with the growing demand for their signature fun, magic and theatre for all to enjoy.

They added a further five floors of toys to the Hamleys flagship store as it became full of puppets, pedal cars and miniature railway trains. Hamleys faced hard times in the late 1920s and it was forced to close in 1931. However, Walter Lines, chairman of the Tri-Ang company, bought Hamleys and worked hard to bring customers back.

In 1938, his efforts were rewarded as Queen Mary gave Hamleys the Royal Warrant. Hamleys London was bombed five times during World War Two but that didn’t stop them, while the Festival of Britain in 1951 brought a Grand Dolls Salon and a vast model railway.

Four years later, Queen Elizabeth II honoured Walter Lines with a second Royal Warrant as a Toys and Sports Merchant. From one man’s dream Hamleys in London's Regent Street became the landmark it is today. The toys may have changed since 1760, but the delight they bring to children remains the same.
