Outfitters Ralph Hawes and George Frederick Curtis opened their first store in Piccadilly Arcade, London, in 1913, and it was soon acclaimed by aristocracy and Hollywood's elite, with the likes of the Duke of Windsor, Lord Mountbatten, Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant among their customers.

In fact, they dressed Lord Mountbatten for most of his life and went to great lengths to ensure they met his demands to perfection. The Duke of Windsor was perhaps their most famous client and he placed his first order in 1922. They became his shirt maker of choice and he granted them their first Royal Warrant the same year.

Hawes and Curtis created the spread collar, which was designed to accommodate his ties and the knot he inspired — the Windsor. They also introduced the innovative backless evening waistcoat, which was renowned for its comfort. The 1930s saw them produce suits and overcoats, while by 1934, they had seven shops on Jermyn Street and Piccadilly Arcade.

Between 1938 and 1957, they received a further three Royal Warrants. Jumping forward to the 21st century, 2002 saw Hawes and Curtis bought for £1 by businessman Touker Suleyman, who has transformed it into a globally renowned brand. Now selling menswear and womenswear, they have more than 20 stores in the UK.
