Master of Malt was built by three childhood friends born in the early 1980s who, as they grew older, developed an interest in fine spirits — particularly single malt whisky.

One of the friends' families had a close relationship with a whisky shop based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. It was called Master of Malt, which had originally begun trading in 1985 as an independent bottler, taking orders for single malt whiskies from the world's best distilleries via mail order.

A Master of Malt store was opened and they expanded their range. As the three friends entered their 20s, they took different paths, but remained close and began to devise plans to build a business together. In the early 2000s, Justin Petszaft wanted to develop some web design skills and developed the first Master of Malt website.

Over time, he began running the business day-to-day and eventually acquired it. The shop was closed and Master of Malt was taken entirely online. In 2009, Justin persuaded his two childhood friends, Tom McGuinness and Ben Elefsen, to join him. There was a complete relaunch of the website a year later and the business has gone on to grow and win awards.
