Post Office Travel Money Card: how it works

If you don’t want to worry about carrying cash around with you when you’re visiting a foreign country, why not order a Post Office Travel Money Card online instead?

Your Post Office Travel Money Card is a multicurrency prepaid card (licensed by Mastercard International) which can be loaded up with 23 different types of foreign currency with a value of as little as £50. You can load a small amount of currency to your card to start with and add more money straight from your bank account via the app while you’re on your holiday, or load your prepaid card with up to £5,000 before you go.

You can also check your balance, view a prompt for your pin, freeze your card and even convert currencies, all from your mobile phone. Just search ‘Post Office Travel’ on the App Store and download their free app in seconds. You can use your travel app to pay for general holiday costs in the local currency while you’re abroad, as well as for cash withdrawals.

This means you can avoid card fees when you’re spending money abroad and won’t run the risk of your card provider freezing your cards while you’re away. If your currency card is stolen while you’re abroad, call Post Office Travel Money immediately and they’ll freeze the card and help sort out a replacement. Travel Money Cards don’t expire for three years, so if you don’t use all the money on your card while you’re away, you can save the money on your Travel Card account to help with future holiday costs However, if you need access to your money straight away, you can either withdraw your remaining balance in sterling at your local Post Office branch (with a max daily cash withdrawal of £300) or over the phone. Alternatively, continue using your Travel Money Card at home in the UK. The Post Office will convert your money into sterling with no fees every time you pay for something with your card (they’ll just use the exchange rate for that day).
