PUMA Features

Company History

The origins of PUMA date back to 1924, when brothers Rudolf and Adolf Dassler founded the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory in Germany.

Some 24 years after this, Rudolf Dassler founded the PUMA Schuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler company. That same year saw PUMA's first football boot, the ATOM, launched and several members of the West German team wore them in their first post-war match, against Switzerland, in 1950.

Rudolf Dassler, in collaboration with a number of other experts, then successfully developed a football boot with screw-in studs, which resulted in the launch of the SUPER ATOM in 1952. The development continued and, eight years later, PUMA became the first sports shoe manufacturer to use the vulcanization production technique, where the sole and the shaft of the boot are bonded.

The brand's now famous jumping cat logo was created by cartoonist Lutz Backes in 1967 - the same year PUMA extended their range to include sportswear. Jumping forward 19 years, 1986 saw the company go public, while running shoes with Trinomic technology entered the market in 1989.

The first sports shoe without laces, the Disc, were launched in 1991, while the fusion of sports and lifestyle occurred in 1999 with the launch of the Mostro, with their Velcro fastener and spike sole.

Having introduced the Formula One-inspired Speedcat three years earlier, 2004 saw PUMA announced as official sponsors of Scuderia Ferrari, which allowed them to develop licensed Ferrari footwear, clothing and accessories. Recent times saw the company introduce their most powerful football boot, the evoPOWER, while in 2016, they became the official outfitter of the Red Bull Racing Formula One team.

A History of Sporting Success

Just four years after the formation of the company, the 1928 summer Olympic Games in Amsterdam saw the majority of German athletes competing in Dassler spikes, which Jesse Owens also wore when winning four gold medals in Berlin eight years later.

PUMA's impact on the football field, meanwhile, continued when Pele won his second straight World Cup in 1962 while wearing their boots. After Eusebio top scored in the 1966 tournament, PUMA honoured his achievement by introducing the legendary KING boot two years later, while 1970 saw Pele help Brazil win their third World Cup while wearing the PUMA KING, which featured a revolutionary flat structure that made them lighter.

In 1982, Diego Maradona played in his first World Cup tournament wearing the PUMA TORERO boot, which was equipped with a highly flexible DUOFLEX sole. By this time, PUMA had established themselves as a leading tennis brand and when Boris Becker became the youngest, first unseeded and first German to win Wimbledon in 1985, he was one of the first players to adopt a mid-top shoe and worked closely with the company to develop his signature model of PUMA trainers.

Back on the football field, 2006 saw Italy become the first PUMA-sponsored team to win the World Cup. Dassler had made their sporting breakthrough in athletics, so it was perhaps fitting that 80 years after their debut at the 1928 Games, PUMA athlete Usain Bolt smashed the 100m and 200m world records on his way to three gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, before setting an amazing 100m mark of 9.58 seconds at the world championships in Berlin a year later.
