Company History

The Singapore Airlines story goes back to May 1st, 1947, when the Malayan Airways Limited (MAL) Airspeed Consul took off from Singapore Kallang Airport.

It was the first of three flights a week to Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang. Over the next two years, flights were introduced to places such as Bangkok, Saigon, Jakarta, Rangoon and North Borneo. In 1963, the Federation of Malaysia formed and, to celebrate this, Malayan Airways Limited became Malaysian Airways Limited. Just three years later and the name changed again, to Malaysia-Singapore Airlines.

The 1970s saw the airline become the first to give out free headsets for an in-flight entertainment system and offer a choice of meals and drinks in economy class, while 1971 saw them make their first transcontinental journey — from Singapore to London. The following year saw Malaysia-Singapore Airlines separate into two companies, Malaysian Airline System and Singapore Airlines.

Tradewinds, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, launched in 1989. Now known as SilkAir, it was the first to send a Boeing 747-400 commercial flight from Singapore across the Pacific. Their frequent flyer programme, KrisFlyer, was launched in 1999, enabling members to earn miles when they flew.

In a 2006 revamp of cabin products, they unveiled the world's widest first and business class seats, which transformed into luxury flat beds, while the following year saw them take delivery of the world's first Airbus A380 aircraft. The non-stop, all business class service from Singapore to Los Angeles began in 2008, while 2016 saw them launch a service which linked Singapore with the capital cities of both Australia and New Zealand for the first time.
